Two highly-charged words on food packaging are Organic (as in "organic food") and health (as in "health food"). Do you know what they mean? Don't be embarrassed to say no. Neither do most health professionals.
To a chemist, organic means a substance that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. By this chemical standard, all food--and all human beings--are organic.
But foodies use organic to describe plant foods grown without pesticides or synthetic chemicals, or to describe the poultry, fish, beef, and lamb from animals that were raised on a diet with no antibiotics or other medicating chemicals to assure healthy and efficiently-producing animals.
There is no scientific definition for healthy food, a similarly imprecise term, applied indiscriminately to "healthful" stuff like high-protein, low-fat pasta made from artichoke flour and are-you-kidding-stuff like high-fat carob candy bars.
Organic foods and health foods can be satisfying and delicious. But the label terms may leave you hungry--for more information. ~Aunt Millie

Welcome to the Nutritionally Speaking Blog
All of us need to learn how to take better care of ourselves and we can start by learning more about nutrition by making wiser choices about food. We often mistreat our bodies when we are young and by the time we reach our middle years, we end up on medications because we haven't taken care of ourselves. Our children grow up on fast foods; forge bad habits by eating in front of the television and eating way too fast. No wonder the kids in this country are obese.
By learning more about nutrition we can covet good behaviors and make changes in our diets that will help to eliminate those problems and live longer, leaner, and cleaner.
Join me in discovering how to break those bad habits and turn our lives around. Let's turn our bodies into lean, fat burning machines and eat healthy. Here you will find the key to long life and a healthy heart. ~ Aunt Millie
